Some of you already know that Maile broke her leg two weeks ago. Roughly two weeks ago, she was jumping on her cousins' large trampoline. We were about 1hr from departure on an overnight drive from North Carolina back to DC. We knew something was terribly wrong but we didn't know it was broken.

We ended up driving back as planned, but stopped overnight about 3hrs from DC, knowing we were up for a long day at the ER. Turned out to be the right move, Maria and Maile were at the ER for 4-5 hours. The orthopedist at the hospital had only been practicing for 2 weeks and kept referencing a manual while diagnosing and planning treatment. It was a little worse than that, but I don't want to rehash everything. The bottom line is, we weren't well assured that everything was handled properly. We confirmed poor treatment at a specialist later that week who pointed out the leg wasn't positioned well and her foot was pointed. He asked us to come in at the end of the week to replace the cast.

Last week we were able to get a clean view of the break. Sure enough... her right tibia is broken just below the knee in a dome-like fracture. The good news is that the location of the break has good blood supply for healing. The bad news us that it's a least 3-4 more weeks before she'll. be out of it for good.

I'll try to update this post with some photos over the weekend.

p.s. for Julie,Kimie and Norie... and potentily Ken, I've been reading a lot of negative literature on trampolines and toddlers/kids... basically the highest incidents of broken bones. Something to keep in mind.

much love, -Jon
