First soccer game

Hi all,

Today was Paul's first soccer game. We signed him up for our neighborhood team in the Portland Youth Soccer league. His team is Alameda "Thunder," and check out their snazzy uniforms! I wasn't at practice last night, but I know Paul was pretty excited about the new uniforms that were handed out!

Today was the first game. They play 3 on 3, on a half-field, 2 twenty-minute halves, two games going at once. They don't keep score for this age group, and there is no goalie. It was super fun and here are a few photos of Paul and his team today. His team is all first grade boys, but we noticed some of the teams were mixed girls and boys. Not sure why, but I wouldn't have minded having him on a co-ed team.

We had lots more fun today too -- a soapbox derby event right after soccer, riding bikes in the park after lunch, and tonight a picnic dinner to see the thousands of Vaux's sifts swirling into the annual roost site where they gather before heading to South America for the winter.

Here are some of the team with their coach, Kevin, whose son is on the team too.

A team photo at the start of the day.

Blurry, but here is Paul in action.

Cheering for a goal!

Well, Ben was a good sport to sit through the game, and it was kind of Kimie and Dave to come to the game too! Ben's favorite part of the day was the soapbox derby, he told me at bedtime. Tomorrow, more fun -- we are going to a local trout farm for fishing! We are packing in all the fun we can before the rains come! Last weekend we visited Fort Vancouver, and our local amusement park, Oaks Park, and we had a nice picnic dinner and hike in an easy and accessible part of Forest Park, where we saw a Barred owl perched in a tree, right above the trail.

Cheers, everyone. Julie

Thanks, Julie, for those wonderful photos and the post. I hope Paul enjoys being part of a soccer team. Mom will be happy to hear that Ben liked the soapbox derby! -M

The Latest on Leia Lately, Leia has been giving names to all of her stuffed animals, dolls, and any character in a book we come across without a name. They are very creative for the most part... Today, she named her doll from Aunt Marie and Aunt Kimie " Baby Jesus "!! I guess she remembered the name from when I told her the story of Christmas and it made an impression on her. I just had to share that with you all. I'm trying my best not to explode into laughter each time she says it. :) These days, Leia likes to run to yochien, and run home from yochien, and "race" me on the bike. She is a fast runner, and barely runs out of breath, and so someday, I expect her to visit Marie and Tim for the Boston marathon! Today, she actually ran out of breath, telling me, "There is no more air in my tummy! (Onaka ni kuuki ga nakunacchatta!)" She learned a song in yochien where they use the expression "gozansu" as a sentence ending. These days, she adds it ...

Jiji's paintings

Hi all, We had a productive day at Shiki yesterday and had the estimate for the move to the storage, where we will make the final labeling and preparation for shipment to the US. We will be back there a few more times before the move to storage on the 16th, Friday. There are a few more items I'd like for you all to look at, but since I don't have all the data collected, I'll send them in batches. Here are a few of Jiji's paintings I'm wondering if anyone is interested in. Please let me know! Thanks!
