Hey guys,
I went to Paul's last soccer practice for this term and I just wanted to share it with you. Papa, I thought of you--you would have been really impressed--he moved like white lightening.. scoring goals. He looked beautiful. Four children on each team, they dominated the gym running up and down the court. His coach is great and encourages good sportsmanship, including cheering for EACH goal, both teams cheer together, including the audience. Poor Paul, it was a neck and neck game and he felt crushed to see me cheer for the other team and would run crying in despair, then I'd encourage him to go back, "your team needs you" He'd run back in and score a goal and then jump high in elation a victory spasm. Then back to dispair again--heaven hell heaven hell. Crying laughing. It was after a long school day, his allergies and having his aunt cheer on the other team was a little rough for a little 5 yr old body. Poor thing. His classmate from school was on the other team and he said, "I hate catherine now." And then as I reminded him that Catherine was a dear friend, he lamented, "I will only take soccer again if Catherine does it too." We talked about how sometimes we say things that isn't really our "brain" talking but our "emotions" talking. He admitted that those were his emotions talking. I just wish you all could have seen him playing so well, crying, laughing, so spirited. His coach gave him a big compliment at the end of practice and told him that he is a good soccer player with good sportsmanship. He consistently did cheer for the other team when they scored and did not pull or grab at shirts as other children (Macy) were doing to him. He has a arch nemisis as he and said nemisis, Macy are both the strongest players and usually assigned to oppostie teams. Coach told Julie that Macy has more skill but Paul plays with exuberance. When julie shared this with Paul at the dinner table, Paul said, "I'm going to get more skill and then get better than Macy" Where does this competitive urge come from? I thought papa would get a kick out of all this drama. His coach said that seeing that exuberance, he recommends soccer camp for him this summer. We'll see!
