Well, the storm is over! We are very happy to report that we did not lose power during the storm- hooray!
Tim did not have work on Friday, because snow was slated to start during the workday, and the City was very keen not to repeat some problems that had occurred in the blizzard of '78. The snow started out on Friday afternoon, nothing terrible, but enough to start shoveling out our building after dark every few hours. The weather report said that 2-3" per hour would start happening after around 8 p.m., so we did a few rounds up until 11 or so....
The next morning, we started shoveling a little after 7 in the morning. Wind (rated above 80 mph gusts during the night) had blown NE up the street, piling quite a bit on our end. We had an instituted driving ban that kept non-emergency vehicles off the roadways, and no mass transit. Besides the plows, which kept pushing snow into the access ramps, drains, and emergency exits of our building, we didn't have much to contend with besides the usual shoveling
Tim clears the exit door after a plow banked us in.
And then pushes me into a snow drift. You can't even tell the difference, can you?
We took several walks around town and saw Boston in a whole different light.
Tim near the Christian Science Plaza
Residents walking in the roadways- the only option, since many ramps and sidewalks were not shoveled...
Snowshoeing in front of Trinity Church
Commonwealth Avenue, snowed in!
Shoveled, unshoveled!
What is this???? Oh yeah, SNOW.
This is the start of the job- see the bump on the right? That is a car- wonder how they will dig out of the plowed snowbank?
On the Charles River- tons of cross country skiers and residents out to snow-see
Cross country skiers.
Official counts at Logan Airport rate the snowfall at 24.7", one of the top 5 storms in the past 100 years. Overall, response has been great- all primary roadways looked great. As walkers, we see the impassable crosswalks and banks where plows have pushed snow up against the sidewalks, but let's hope that clears before the rain we're due to get on Monday!

Nice of the storm to pick a Friday to give everyone a weekend to enjoy the white city and hopefully enough time to recover from all the shoveling! :)
