Oregon Coast February 4-7, 2011

The beach is one of my favorite places. I love it for the breezes, rhythmic sound of waves, wide expansive view and space to run, yell, explore and awaken all the senses. It is the most therapeutic setting for kids and parents alike, and I'm quite certain this family would be a lot less mentally and emotionally sound without periodic trips to the Oregon coast.

The Multnomah County Library, Lucien's employer, owns a house on Neahkahnie Beach. If you want to rent it for 3 or 4 nights, you put your name into a lottery a few times a year and cross your fingers. The last time we stayed here was when Ben was a toddler, so we were super glad to be back -- Naomi's first time to walk on sand and see ocean waves. It was a treat to have Kimie and Irene join us for two nights. We hope Peter can come next time too. In fact, next time we win the lottery, we want ALL of the family to come! The place has enough beds for 13 people, although half of them are in one dorm-style room -- maybe all the little cousins could sleep in there.

Well, as you'll see, I took far too many photos, but again, it's one of my favorite landscapes to photograph, and favorite settings for family shots too. As you can see from the smiles, we don't care about the chilly wind and rain. I hope you'll enjoy viewing a few before you get too sick of scrolling through. Maybe Kimie has some nice shots she'll share too...

Hours of football on the beach. Much better place than the living room of our tiny house, or bouncing off parked cars on our street.

Ben had lots and lots of time for flying his kite.

Two girls watching Mama/Aunt Kimie split firewood.

The boys found a salamander.

Look at these happy faces! And this is on Superbowl Sunday with no TV!

And more kite flying...

The Latest on Leia Lately, Leia has been giving names to all of her stuffed animals, dolls, and any character in a book we come across without a name. They are very creative for the most part... Today, she named her doll from Aunt Marie and Aunt Kimie " Baby Jesus "!! I guess she remembered the name from when I told her the story of Christmas and it made an impression on her. I just had to share that with you all. I'm trying my best not to explode into laughter each time she says it. :) These days, Leia likes to run to yochien, and run home from yochien, and "race" me on the bike. She is a fast runner, and barely runs out of breath, and so someday, I expect her to visit Marie and Tim for the Boston marathon! Today, she actually ran out of breath, telling me, "There is no more air in my tummy! (Onaka ni kuuki ga nakunacchatta!)" She learned a song in yochien where they use the expression "gozansu" as a sentence ending. These days, she adds it ...

Jiji's paintings

Hi all, We had a productive day at Shiki yesterday and had the estimate for the move to the storage, where we will make the final labeling and preparation for shipment to the US. We will be back there a few more times before the move to storage on the 16th, Friday. There are a few more items I'd like for you all to look at, but since I don't have all the data collected, I'll send them in batches. Here are a few of Jiji's paintings I'm wondering if anyone is interested in. Please let me know! Thanks!
